- The count was undertaken manually, and by Automatic Traffic Recorders (ATR) as follows:
- Freeways were counted both manually from 6:00 to 20:00 (8:00 pm) and
ATR for 24 hours with the data from 6:00 to 18:30 (6:30 pm) put in the databank.
- Busy Regional roads were counted both manually during peak periods 7:00 to 11:00,
14:00 (2:00 pm) to 18:00 (6:00 pm) and ATR for 24 hours with data from 6:00 to 18:30 put
in the databank.
- Low volume Regional roads and local roads were counted by ATR for 24 hours with the
data from 6:00 to 18:30 put in the databank.
The method of counting for each station is identified in the list
of stations available here.
- The vehicle totals were controlled, for all stations, by the ATR data.
Total vehicles include bicycles. The vehicle distribution was as counted for
manually counted time periods and the average of other manual counts in the area for
ATR counted time periods.
- Taxi and bus drivers are included in the occupancy of taxis and buses.
- There is a common definition of vehicles throughout the GTA and coordinated counting
responsibilities along boundary screenlines with Durham, Toronto and Peel. GO Transit staff
counted Rail passenger volumes. The agency undertaking the count for all data is indicated
beside the list of stations available here.
CAUTION WHEN USING THE DATA
The manual counts on Regional roads were done by split shifts from 7 am to 11 am and from 2 pm to 6 pm.
Vehicle distribution by vehicle type for other time periods and on low volume roads was developed by
comparison with other counts in the area.
